The two-week program offers a wide selection of courses to meet your academic needs.

Scheduled field trips and personal exploration time enable you to see London up close.

An optional day trip to Stonehenge/Salisbury will be offered.

Housing

Participants will reside at St. Giles London, one of the most centrally located hotels in London. Situated in the heart of the West End, St. Giles is just a few minutes’ walk from Oxford Street, Soho, Theatres, the British Museum, Covent Garden, and many other attractions. Tottenham Court Underground Station (Central and Northern lines) is just 2 minutes away, right around the corner from the hotel entrance.

Rooms

Rooms are twin bedrooms (Classic Rooms), equipped with two single beds, desk and chair, storage cabinets and drawers, and an en-suite bathroom with shower, basin, mirror and toilet. An LCD TV, telephone, digital safe, fan and hairdryer are also included.

  • Students will be housed in twin bedrooms (Classic Rooms).
  • Faculty will be assigned to double rooms (Classic Rooms).
  • No triple rooms with three individual beds are available; only one double and one single. Facilities
  • Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the residence.
  • Daily full English breakfast is provided in the Sage & Chilli Restaurant.

NOTE: Past faculty and admin have emphasized the rooms are small. However, the location and other amenities (cleanliness, breakfast, staff, etc.,) make St. Giles a fine accommodation site. As one faculty put it, “The UK is an island and things are all smaller and, hence, the rooms will be small.”

Drop-off and self-serve options are available nearby.

Transportation

An Oyster Card pre-loaded with £50 will be provided to each participant, but top-ups will be required (roughly £50 per week) over the course of the program. You may add more value/credit to your Visitor Oyster Card by simply ‘topping up’.

Students will need to budget an additional £50 for local transportation costs.

John Strada A Senior Lecturer, John brings m more than 20 years of experience teaching college level Communication Studies courses. He has taught courses in Small Group Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Leadership, Basic and Advanced Public Speaking, and various hybrid introductory courses with content ranging from small group and interpersonal communication to public speaking, basic theory & methods and communication history. John also currently teaches as part of EKU’s nationally prominent honors program, where he team teaches the freshman Honors Rhetoric course with faculty members from English and Philosophy.

Group or Individual Travel Allowed

Option One - Group Travel

Travel together with faculty, staff and other participants from your CCSA program with our group travel. CCSA will purchase a airline ticket from select U.S. cities on your behalf. The airline cost will be included in your final bill from CCSA. In addition to the flight, you will also receive transport to/from the accommodation in the destination city and the airport.

You can check our currently available departure cities on our departures page CCSA highly recommends this option for those new to international travel.

Includes:
  • roundtrip air transportation from one of CCSA's designated U.S. departure cities.
  • roundtrip ground transportation between airport and the accommodation site.
  • CCSA faculty and staff to guide you through the immigration and customs process.

Option Two - Individual Travel

If you wish to make independent travel arrangements and depart from a city not listed or travel outside the program dates please choose INDEPENDENT TRAVEL from the selection below. You will book your own flights and arrange your own transportation to/from the airport and the accommodation site of the program. This is a great option for going early, staying late, or using airline miles to purchase tickets. We highly recommend participants not fly standby for these programs as a late arrival may negatively impact your grade.

Important Note for Independent Travelers: Please be aware that your check-in date may be up to 24 hours AFTER the program start date (program dates include travel time).

Contemporary Art Practices in London
Course Description: Imagine yourself walking down the streets of London. observing murals, street performers, and interesting architecture, while grabbing some food at a local market on your way to a world-class art museum, like the Royal Academy of Arts, the Tate Modern, or the Victoria and Albert Museum of Applied Arts, Decorative Arts and Design. At the same time, we will be exploring the current art scene, visiting local contemporary galleries, meeting with artists, and seeing art beyond traditional spaces. While this class may satisfy an art appreciation or art history requirement, it is also open to art and design majors seeking a unique experiential opportunity to enhance their skills.

From Grain to Glass: Exploring Adult Beverage Industries
Course Description: This course explores all business aspects of the brewing, distilling, and wine-making markets in the United Kingdom. London is home to English Dry Gin, unique beer styles, many distributors (and other supply chain partners). This class examines the many factors that affect the supply chain and business decision-making in the alcoholic beverage industry, including the environmental, political, regulatory, and economic aspects impacting this industry now. Visits are planned to distilleries and breweries, as well as suppliers and distributors, from which students will gain a comparative perspective on how the American and British adult beverage industries manage similar issues and challenges.

Course Description: Take an exciting journey through the history of British science and medicine in this experiential learning opportunity. We'll explore the fascinating stories behind some of science's greatest discoveries and explore their impact on our modern world. By visiting some of the most significant scientific locations in Britain, including universities, laboratories, museums, hospitals, breweries, and crime scenes, science will come to life, and you’ll gain a new appreciation for the ingenuity and persistence of some of Britain's greatest scientific and medical minds, as well as the historical, cultural, and social context for scientific breakthroughs and their practical application.

Stranger in a Strange Land: Creative Writing in London
Course Description: Foreign travel can be both wonderful and scary. That's a good thing! Especially for creative writing students. Writers of all experience levels and majors are invited to tap into London's sights, sounds, smells, and cultural differences to create fiction, poetry, or nonfiction essays. By combining field trips to such London literary sites as Virginia Woolf’s Bloomsbury Square and Charles Dickens’ favorite pub, as well as sampling the everyday life experiences of ordinary Londoners, we will be inspired to create written work fit for publication. Most importantly, we will learn to embrace the anxiety, confusion, and discovery of foreign travel--skills that will produce vibrant writing, but also empathetic, curious leaders of tomorrow.

Green Money: Sustainable Finance in Action
Course Description: Explore the intersection of finance and sustainability in this unique London-based class, with visits to Fintech companies that are leading the way in sustainable finance. Learn about their environmental practices, including renewable energy investments, carbon pricing, and sustainable investing, that have led to London being ranked #1 in the Global Green Finance Index. Additionally, we will visit London's traditional financial institutions, such as the London Stock Exchange and the Canary Wharf financial district, to understand how they are adapting to low-carbon emissions and sustainability goals. This course provides an unparalleled opportunity to gain a hands-on understanding of the cutting-edge approaches and real-world applications of sustainable finance.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Finance (preferred). It may be substituted for a sophomore Introduction to Business class.

Law in London: Exploring the Bedrock of British Legal Tradition
Course Description:

This course will give participants the rare opportunity to experience first-hand the bedrock of the British legal tradition. We will take a step back in time to visit London’s storied Inns of Court where so many distinguished lawyers received their training and also witness wigged barristers in action today at the Old Bailey Criminal Court and the Royal Courts of Justice. Day trips to Oxford and Cambridge Universities will help students understand the academic and cultural context for British legal traditions. This class enables American students to recognize and articulate how American civil and criminal statutes have evolved from the English common law.

Health through the Ages: Evolution of Healthcare in London
Course Description: History doesn't repeat itself but it often rhymes. Explore how past understanding of health, disease, and medical treatment, public health policies, and healthcare practices continue to reverberate today. The city of London, dating back to AD 47 and the Roman empire, will serve as our backdrop providing historical insights through visits to sites such as Old Operating Theatre and the Florence Nightingale Museum. Perspectives on modern-day impacts will be gained from hospital visits and interactions with healthcare professionals, with attention to how the UK healthcare model compares/contrasts with the US. This course is designed for future healthcare professionals across disciplines.
