London offers a view of the world unlike any other capital city. Join CCSA and a community of scholars as we explore London and the surrounding area to get a taste of England and it’s place in the world – past, present, and future. Check out the wide range of courses listed below taught by CCSA faculty from our member schools.

An optional day trip to Stonehenge/Salisbury will be offered.

What is included in the Program Fee?

  • A three-credit hour course
  • Cultural and class-related activities

Participants will reside at the London School of Economics (LSE) Bankside House, located in the historic borough of Southwark on the Thames’ South Bank. A walk along the river will take you to the London Eye, the Houses of Parliament, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the Tate Modern and the South Bank Arts Centre, as well as the famous Borough Market. London Bridge (Northern and Jubilee lines) and Southwark (Jubilee line) Underground Stations are a short walk from the residence.

Students will be housed in twin bedrooms, equipped with two single beds (linens and towels are provided), wardrobe, bedside table, desk, chair, and an en-suite bathroom with shower, sink, and toilet. Free WiFi is provided throughout the residence.

Daily full English breakfast is provided in the Bankside House Restaurant.

Steven Guns

On-Site Director

Steven Guns Steven is the Director of Education Abroad at Murray State University and has been directing programs with CCSA since 2012. Steven studied in Spain and South Korea as a student. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and his Master of Science in international education administration/college student personnel from Murray State University. Steven has made accessible study abroad a focus, working on multiple programs designed for students with disabilities.

Group or Individual Travel Allowed

Option One - Group Travel

Travel together with faculty, staff and other participants from your CCSA program with our group travel. CCSA will purchase a airline ticket from select U.S. cities on your behalf. The airline cost will be included in your final bill from CCSA. In addition to the flight, you will also receive transport to/from the accommodation in the destination city and the airport.

You can check our currently available departure cities on our departures page CCSA highly recommends this option for those new to international travel.

Includes:
  • roundtrip air transportation from one of CCSA's designated U.S. departure cities.
  • roundtrip ground transportation between airport and the accommodation site.
  • CCSA faculty and staff to guide you through the immigration and customs process.

Option Two - Individual Travel

If you wish to make independent travel arrangements and depart from a city not listed or travel outside the program dates please choose INDEPENDENT TRAVEL from the selection below. You will book your own flights and arrange your own transportation to/from the airport and the accommodation site of the program. This is a great option for going early, staying late, or using airline miles to purchase tickets. We highly recommend participants not fly standby for these programs as a late arrival may negatively impact your grade.

Important Note for Independent Travelers: Please be aware that your check-in date may be up to 24 hours AFTER the program start date (program dates include travel time).

Not required for U.S. citizens for less than a 3-month stay. Non-U.S. citizens are responsible for obtaining a visa as needed.

Discover London Through Theatre, Music, Art, and Design
London is one of the most dynamic cities in the world, and home to centuries of visual art, performance, and design. In this class you’ll explore some of London’s famous sites, but you’ll spend even more time discovering unique destinations and experiences that are off the beaten path. You’ll see street art and the great masterworks, hear classical and contemporary world music, watch productions of cutting-edge theatre and Shakespeare, eat traditional British food and try new flavors – you’ll even meet some of the artists themselves. You’ll experience first-hand how it feels, looks, and sounds as all the arts come together on the vibrant streets of London!

All the World’s a Stage: Public Speaking in London
This course serves as an introduction to public speaking in the exciting, cosmopolitan city of London. Be inspired by such destinations as Westminster Abbey, the British Museum, Arsenal Emirates Stadium, Stratford-Upon-Avon, and learn to create compelling, vivid presentations that will enhance your professional skills. Additionally, you will learn the art and science of public speaking from tour guides and professional communicators. Students will learn to craft informative, persuasive, and special occasion presentations in the course. This course is designed for any student wishing to become a more effective, empowered communicator.

Storytelling and Influence: Exploring London’s History, Legends and Culture
Learn the elements of oral storytelling design, presentation and influence while exploring one of the world’s most story-rich cities: London. Learn from local storytellers and immerse yourself in the rich culture, history and legends of England at such iconic sites as the Tower of London, Canterbury Cathedral, the Royal Albert Hall and the BBC. Develop and present your own stories through the mediums of live performance, video, and podcasting. A must-take course for students interested in communication, English, broadcasting, history, education, parks and recreation, public health, law and business, or anyone wanting to become a more engaging and influential speaker or performer.

Multicultural London: Social Justice Perspectives
This course offers students an opportunity to examine the culture and diversity of London -- the world’s most multicultural city. Learn how and why groups have migrated to London and how social inequalities evolved over time there. We will visit the Migration Museum, the neighborhood of Brixton to learn about marginalized Caribbean populations, Whitechapel and East London to understand poverty in the Victorian era, and Chinatown’s Gerrard Street. The excursions and course content will allow students to challenge, question, and analyze socially constructed systemic inequalities and learn how Londoners are working to break cycles of socialization to move in a direction of change.

Beheadings, Beatles, and Bowie: Music and Culture Clash
Protest and persecution have launched the greatest cultural revolutions, while music is the artistic reflection of that change. Through readings, discussions, expositions, walking tours to Camden Jazz Cafe and Abbey Road, and live performances in Westminster Abbey and the English National Opera, this course explores the role of music in London’s cultural upheaval, from the religious wars of the 17th century to Ziggy Stardust and Amy Winehouse in modern times.

Comparing Healthcare Systems in the United Kingdom and the United States
Learn about the differences between the British and American healthcare systems while living in London! We'll take field trips in London and other parts of the UK to healthcare facilities and historical sites. We'll interact with healthcare workers and consumers and learn about how the education of healthcare professionals compares to the US model. We'll explore how healthcare has evolved when visiting places such as the Roman Baths in Bath, the Old Operating Theatre in London, and an underground military hospital in the Cliffs of Dover.

Photography / Art & Design

Experiments in Photography: England Through the Camera’s Lens
Designed for anyone interested in art, photography or British culture, this fun hands-on course introduces a range of historical and contemporary experimental practices. Students will explore the birth of photography in England and the Victorian obsession with all things optical that helped lead up to it. We’ll create a photographic record of our travels, while experimenting with pinhole cameras, stereo photography, cyanotypes, emulsion lifts, light painting, book binding and other creative processes. We’ll visit London galleries, the Photography Centre at the Victoria and Albert Museum, beautiful Lacock Abbey where photography was invented, and scenic sites around the city. All skill levels are welcome.
