Optional Trips - Summer 2017

APPLICATION/PAYMENT DEADLINE: March 31, 2017

Join your fellow CCSA participants on a variety of optional excursions offered during the London Summer Programs! The excursions are at additional cost and have been planned by CCSA. These dates and times are scheduled between class sessions, so you won't be missing out on any course activities. Optional trips offer a great opportunity to travel outside London and see more of Europe!

Space on each of the optional excursions is limited, so we urge you to apply well in advance of the March 31, 2017 deadline.

Weekend Excursion to EDINBURGH & ALNWICK CASTLE
Friday, July 14 – Sunday, July 16

IMPORTANT NOTE: Participants must reserve 2 days of their BritRail Pass for travel on this excursion.

Open to Mid-Summer (2-week) and Summer (4-week) program participants

See Edinburgh Castle and the crown jewels of Scotland! Upon arrival at Edinburgh’s Waverly Train Station, you will be met by a coach and guide for a city tour of Edinburgh. Following the tour, you will be delivered to Chancellor’s Court at the University of Edinburgh’s Pollock Halls of Residence for check-in and dinner. Saturday will be free for you to explore (sites such as Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, museums and historic churches) and to absorb the city’s art, music and theatre culture—with dinner provided that evening at Pollock Halls. On Sunday, you will be transported by coach to Alnwick Castle—featured as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry in the first two Harry Potter films and as the magnificent Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey’s 2014 Christmas special. Following the visit to Alnwick Castle, you will return to London by train from Alnmouth Station.

Full Day Excursion to STONEHENGE & SALISBURY

Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England, is one of the world’s most recognized sites, a circle of mystery that fascinates visitors from all over the world. Your visit will allow you to walk around the outside of the stone circle, and you can listen to some of the myths and legends about Stonehenge on the audio tour.

Salisbury, on the banks of the River Avon, is best known for its glorious cathedral. Salisbury Cathedral dates back to 1220 and has the tallest spire of any cathedral in England. It is also home to the best preserved original manuscript of the Magna Carta. The town retains some lovely medieval streets, and the 15th century Poultry Cross is certainly worth a visit.

Full Day Excursion to BLENHEIM PALACE & THE COTSWOLDS

Blenheim Palace is a masterpiece of English Baroque architecture and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. The stunning State Rooms are brimming with priceless works of art and magnificent tapestries. The Palace is still inhabited today by the Duke of Marlborough. The Gardens are set in over 754 hectares of land with an exquisite water garden.

Following Blenheim Palace and Gardens, you will stop at the town center of Woodstock for a short visit before driving on through the Cotswolds—a region of outstanding natural beauty characterized by attractive small towns and thatched villages of yellow Cotswold stone made prosperous by the historic wool trade. Explore the history, art and culture of the ancient, picturesque market towns of Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold.

Weekend Excursion to PARIS
Friday, July 28 – Sunday, July 30

Eiffel Tower with CCSA Students

See Notre Dame, the Louvre, and the Eiffel Tower! Participants will be transported by coach to London St. Pancras Station, where they will travel to Paris aboard the Eurostar train via the English Channel tunnel. Upon arrival at Paris Gare du Nord Station, participants will board a coach for transfer to the 4-star Hotel Novotel Paris Tour Eiffel. Overlooking the left bank of the Seine, the hotel is only a short walk away from the Eiffel Tower and Montparnasse. Rooms are twin/triple occupancy with private bath, free WiFi and buffet breakfast each morning.

Following check-in and a brief onsite orientation, a local guide will lead a walking tour of the immediate area and offer an introduction to the metro system. A free day on Saturday will allow time for museums, sightseeing and shopping.

Following breakfast and checkout on Sunday, a local guide will lead the group on a walking tour of Saint-Germain-des-Pres and the Latin Quarter—neighborhoods known as havens for the city’s intellectuals and artists. Admire cafes, bookstores and unique storefronts as your guide shares stories of the famous musicians, poets and artists who called the area home throughout the decades. Continue on to the pleasant Place Dauphine, the oldest Square in Paris, before strolling through Paris’ Latin Quarter. The tour will conclude at Notre Dame Cathedral, where you can explore and enjoy lunch before traveling by coach to Paris Gare du Nord Station and return journey to London.
