Téimid go hÉirinn an samhradh seo! Let’s go to Ireland this summer! Dr. Lisa Day will be teaching Enchanted Women of Ireland, emphasizing the supernatural and historical women of Ireland during a three-week adventure of a lifetime. Will we hear wailing banshees? Will fairies play their tricks on us? In our travels all over Ireland and Northern Ireland, we’ll be visiting sites where banshees, fairies, morrigans, and Sheela-na-gigs have made their mark along with places where historical women have been accused of witchcraft. We’ll analyze the potential connections between the supernatural and cultural depictions of women in myth, history, literature, art, folklore, and other media.
Dr. Day is an Associate Professor of English at Eastern Kentucky University, where she leads Appalachian Studies and Women & Gender Studies at Eastern Kentucky University. She has led two previous groups of students in Florence, Italy, where she taught “Feminism and Beauty in Florentine Art” and “Gender and Body/Language in Italian Art and Literature.” An active editor, Dr. Day is leading an effort to develop an open-access introductory textbook in Appalachian Studies, tentatively called Accessible Appalachia, to be published through EKU Libraries' Encompass system. She is also helping African & African American Studies with their open-access readers for AFA 201 and AFA 202.
Dr. Day’s regularly scheduled classes include Intro to Women & Gender Studies, Intro to Appalachia, Feminist Theory & Practice, and Women's Literature. She completed her BA and MA at Western Kentucky University and her PhD at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She is originally from Mammoth Cave, Kentucky.
